About the Education Department

Teaching, discipling, and leading God's people is an incredible privilege requiring the best preparation possible. You need an excellent education to equip you to be an effective Christian leader.

There is no better place to prepare for this calling than at Smith Christian University.

Along with evangelism, outreach, counseling, and preaching, church leaders have a God-given responsibility to educate and equip their people. They are called to help grow their people's relationship with Christ and their abilities to serve others.

Smith Christian University is committed to the preparation of teachers who are dedicated to excellence and service in the Christian mission of teaching. The mission of the teacher education department is to develop classroom leaders by focusing on student's interpersonal skills through the nurturing of human relationship.  We value life-long learning and current educational theory and practice, focusing on professionalism, informed decision-making and reflective practice.

At the conclusion of the program, graduates are prepared to teach in private or public schools, Christian schools, schools abroad, including mission schools.  The program fulfills requirements for teacher certification or licensure in some states.  Graduates may not receive licensure from states requiring a five-year program or additional specific courses. If a student is seeking licensure, It is the students responsibility to check their specific state for requirements.

Why choose Education at Smith?

A decision to become a teacher requires a choice that must be made both carefully and prayerfully. Shaping and molding lives (young or mature) is a remarkable responsibility. A teacher is an individual who is educated in the liberal arts, as well as biblical and theological studies.  A teacher understands people and human institutions; understands and follows the principles of effective teaching; and works to promote individual growth in learning.  A teacher is creative and flexible in thinking and cultivates the potential of students through trust and through both valuing and understanding their diversity. A successful teacher is one who models leadership through interpersonal skills and through the nurturing of human relationships.  It is the natural integration of all these attributes within the framework of a Christian worldview which makes the ideal teacher.

Many options after graduation?

Upon finishing the program, you will have completed coursework equivalent to a double major in Bible and Education.

Your solid theological and biblical foundation allows you to immediately step into full-time ministry roles in the church. You will be qualified to fill many pastoral roles including Christian Education, Discipleship, Small Groups, Children's Ministries, and Associate Pastor.

Smith education students have had the opportunity to teach in a variety of settings here in the U.S. as well as internationally.  Our students have been to Paraguay, Ecuador, Indonesia, and South Korea. At Smith students may major in one of several teacher education programs.
